Additionally, the imported tropical vegetation could not survive in the seasonally cold temperatures and continuously wilted and sagged, requiring replacement prior to each day of filming.
Rather than dismantle the sets and relocate them, the decision was made to strike the sets and start fresh in Rome. Once in Rome, the schedule to construct the sets was expedited to accommodate an unrealistic, studio imposed production start schedule which incurred high overtime costs to accomplish.
Ironically, once completed, these sets sat unused for several months due to delays in production and script development.
Additionally this added to the costs as leads and extras remained on the payroll as they waited idly for filming to commence.
While this was going on, additional facilities were being constructed at a hunting estate on the Tyrrhenian Sea called Torre Astura, which was owned by Prince Stefano Borghese.
Further scenes were slated to be filmed in the Egyptian desert. The sets were complete with majestic temples, golden hieroglyph covered walls, and immense statues of mythological animals flanking promenades, balconies and grand squares.
The enormity of the construction project required so much material to complete that building supplies became scarce throughout the country and needed to be imported.
The camera focuses on Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra and her son Caesarion, both clad in flowing gold robes throughout the entrance, but to me the scene stealer is the sensational sets.
Picture it: Cleopatra and her son, in their grand entrance into Rome, perched atop a black marble sphinx, pulled by over Numina slaves.
The scene is introduced by numerous troves of dancing girls, elephants, archers, chariots, trumpet players and the release of hundreds of doves all as a prelude to the beautifully synchronized march of an army of slaves pulling the queens sphinx topped golden throne.
This under the watchful eyes of Roman nobility and over 6, period-clad, cheering extras. The logistics of this scene alone would have been monumental, a colossal effort that came with its own stress points.
This visual feast, the epicenter of the entire film, which also came with extensive delays and cost overruns, contributes a mere nine minutes of film to the finished movie.

But oh how delicious those nine minutes are as they are captured on film. There is no other point in a movie that I know that is this ambitious and this epic.
The construction of the sets here was hampered after contracts were signed when three workers were killed by previously unknown WW2 mines which exploded during the construction of the required beach sets.
Additionally, the property was adjacent to a NATO firing range resulting in schedules having to be developed to work around the associated noise from the range.
These included Egyptian styled gilded and jewel encrusted goblets and dinner ware, gold laminated hand carved walls, and Dacron purple sails, flown in from California all created to provide a background to the actors and the action.
The painstaking attention to even the tininess of details displays the fact that passion overruled any sense of budget or schedule to ensure that nothing had been spared in the creation of the sets to support the acting.
In researching this article I recently re-watched the documentary included in the anniversary DVD re-release of this film.
I can only say I remain amazed that this film was ever completed and how Mankiewicz managed to get anything even vaguely coherent to the screen.
At the end though, with cuts severely diminishing the storyline, acting and continuity, Mankiewicz, and in particular DeCuir, created a visually stunning telling of the Cleopatra story, the spectacle of which can never be topped again.
Rufio, consult the augurers. In Egypt, will Pompey face me at last? But surely Caesar will now. I must go to Egypt in any case.

All Joseph L. Mankiewicz scripts Joseph L. Mankiewicz Scripts. Cleopatra is crowned Queen of Egypt , and begins to develop megalomaniacal dreams of ruling the world with Caesar, who in turn desires to become King of Rome.
They marry, and when their son Caesarion is born, Caesar accepts him publicly, which becomes the talk of Rome and the Senate.
After he is made dictator for life, Caesar sends for Cleopatra. She arrives in Rome in a lavish procession and wins the adulation of the Roman people.
The Senate grows increasingly discontented amid rumors that Caesar wishes to be made king, which is anathema to the Romans. On the Ides of March in 44 BC, a group of conspirators assassinate Caesar and flee the city, starting a rebellion.
An alliance between Octavian , Caesar's adopted son, Mark Antony Richard Burton , Caesar's right-hand man and general as well as Marcus Ameilius Lepidus put down the rebellion and split up the republic between themselves.
Cleopatra is angered after Caesar's will recognizes Octavian instead of Caesarion as his official heir, and returns to Egypt.
While planning a campaign against Parthia in the east, Antony realizes he needs money and supplies, and cannot get enough from anywhere but Egypt.
After refusing several times to leave Egypt, Cleopatra gives in and meets him in Tarsus. The two begin a love affair, with Cleopatra assuring Antony that he is much more than a pale reflection of Caesar.
Octavian's removal of Lepidus forces Antony to return to Rome, where he marries Octavian's sister, Octavia , to prevent conflict, upsetting and enraging Cleopatra.
Antony and Cleopatra reconcile and marry, with Antony divorcing Octavia. Octavian, incensed, reads Antony's will to the Roman senate, revealing that the latter wishes to be buried in Egypt.
Rome turns against Antony, and Octavian's call for war against Egypt receives a rapturous response. Cleopatra assumes Antony is dead and orders the Egyptian forces home.
Antony follows, leaving his fleet leaderless and soon defeated. Several months later, Cleopatra manages to convince Antony to resume command of his troops and fight Octavian's advancing army.
However, Antony's soldiers abandon him during the night; Rufio Martin Landau , the last man loyal to Antony, kills himself.
Antony tries to goad Octavian into single combat, but is finally forced to flee into the city. When Antony returns to the palace, Apollodorus , not believing that Antony is worthy of his queen, convinces him that she is dead, whereupon Antony falls on his own sword.
Apollodorus then confesses that he misled Antony and assists him to the tomb where Cleopatra and two servants have taken refuge.
Antony dies in Cleopatra's arms. Octavian and his army march into Alexandria with Caesarion's dead body in a wagon.
He discovers the dead body of Apollodorus, who had poisoned himself. Octavian receives word that Antony is dead and Cleopatra is holed up in a tomb.
There he offers her his word that he will allow her to rule Egypt as a Roman province in return for her agreeing to accompany him to Rome.
Cleopatra knows her son is dead and agrees to Octavian's terms, including a pledge not to harm herself. After Octavian departs, she orders her servants in coded language to assist with her suicide.
Octavian realizes that she is going to kill herself and he and his guards burst into Cleopatra's chamber and find her dressed in gold, and dead, along with her servants, and the asp which killed her.
The story of Cleopatra had proved a hit in for silent-screen legend Theda Bara. Paramount's production, using different source material and starring Claudette Colbert , was a huge success.
In , 20th Century Fox executives hired veteran Hollywood producer Walter Wanger to shepherd another film about Cleopatra into production.
Filming began in England but in January Taylor became so ill that production was shut down. Fox was reimbursed by the insurance company and Mamoulian was fired.
Mankiewicz — Suddenly Last Summer. Stevens was tangled up in pre-production for his epic, The Greatest Story Ever Told , so Mankiewicz was courted to take over.
By hiring Mankiewicz, the producers got two birds with one contract: Mankiewicz would direct and write the screenplay.
During filming, Taylor met Burton and the two began an adulterous affair; the scandal made headlines worldwide, since both were married to others, and brought bad publicity to the already troubled production.
Mankiewicz was later fired during the editing phase, only to be rehired to reshoot the opening battle scenes in Spain. The cut of the film which Mankiewicz screened for the studio was six hours long.
