Same old script and dialogue consisting of four letter swear words and the ever popular "Did you hear that? Now that would be scary.
This movie started out as being well-executed with a compelling plot. However as it progressed, the situations became ridiculous, unbelievable, and boring.
By the end I was skipping forward 10 seconds because it was so unbearable. The acting was not too bad. And the start had a good setup. I had fun watching the intro where they talked about the footage we were about to witness.
I enjoyed the scene with the gardener which gave me a chuckle. It was pretty amusing to see a sort of 'behind the scenes' of what goes on behind people who try to create scary movies when there's nothing scary going on.
Then we get to the scares. The acting was believable at first, and they seemed genuinely scared. It was all good up to and including the scene with the hair.
But after that,the plot become so unbelievable that I was unable to take it seriously. Unfortunately you can tell they put a lot of work into it.
The cinematography was good. There was a lot of potential to be a much better movie with if they can have more thoughtful writing and better character development.
It's unfortunate when something like bad writing that ruins a lot of hard work. I would suggest to try to keep things more believable.
Believable to a point where if you watched the movie yourself, you would question whether it was real. And if you can't do that, then at least have some more interesting dialogue and character development to overcome a silly plot.
I see that the sequels are higher rated. I will check them out and see if they were an improvement. Spoler: Matt actually ditched these lameos at the beginning of the movie and went out and got himself a job he could be proud of.
Perhaps 'Matt' is the name of the Patron Saint of cowardly halfwits who are embarrassingly credulous in their belief that the sound of a building settling is an 'omen from beyooooonnnnnnd' BOO!!!
There was no nerve wracking tension in this silliness though there are scenes aplenty that are copped from other films about scooby gangs and hainted hideouts which in turn copped their scenes and concepts from other films.

Well, the ghost hunters here are your stereo-typical batch of goof-balls. Just like the present day reality ghost hunting TV shows, these ghost hunters go into a supposedly extremely haunted insane asylum.
After spending a few hours videoing various locations and conducting numerous EVPs, they decide to leave after getting nothing in return.
Once they head for the exists, then all heck breaks loose - literally. There were a few spots that actual made me tinkle myself just a bit. One spot was when the female crewmember gets her hair pulled.
Another spot was when you first see one of the ghosts for the first time. There were a few other spots as well. Overall, low expectations for this movie, but was pleasantly surprised by it.
Again, always thought that the events portrayed in this movie would have been a good idea. Would like to actually SEE something once in a while in those modern day reality shows.

But my niece wanted to watch this, so I settled in ready to spend an hour and a half or so of not being scared, getting bored and praying for the inevitable deaths to come thick and fast but I was wrong.
The descent into madness is believable and sometimes unsettling and I also found myself actually rooting for certain characters and hoping others wold kick the bucket, which is usually a good sign that the film is engaging enough to have you care one way or the other.
Wonderfully horrible ending if a little rushed but I found myself wanting to watch the second one so if you like the genre I think you'll definitely like this film.

One person found this helpful. I mean Grave Encounters. Brilliant and scary found footage film. At the beginning it is like a spoof of the popular show "Ghost Adventures" and Sean Rogerson does a great impression of Zak Bagins.
It seems cheesy at first but as the group of ghost hunters enter the former mental asylum things get very eerie.
It's more things than make you jump rather that scare you. Being a found footage film the camera does shake a lot. The acting is good and the ending is sickening.
Although the trailer online has over 20 million views, if you want more of a fright I wouldn't check it out until you have seen the film as it reveals a lot of the scary bits and you know what's coming.
The DVD special feature is the making of. I gave this offering four stars because I liked it and it kept me reasonably entertained.
There's no originality here; in fact for whole segments it was so similar to The Blair Witch Project in its depiction that it just seemed that that whole film had been lifted and transplanted into the cadaver of a psychiatric hospital setting with some cosmetic casting changes and back story.
It ups the ante on BWP though and does a good job of achieving a balance between unseen horrors of the ilk of 'bumps in the night' and moving furniture to the brief presence of an 'entity' As a film in itself its quite nicely done and probably could have done without the whole tiresome found footage element and faux introduction at the start.
I liked the idea of it being one of these obscure channel ghost hunting programmes and the lead guy was good in his willingness to fabricate initial interviews and footage in order to fool the gullible audience of his particular programme.
It's creepy rather than scary, performances were of a good standard and after its initial scene setting it does fill the remaining half with quite a lot of watchable scenes.

I love a good found footage horror film and I have to say this film is by far the best one out there!
The film starts out rather slow as they set the scene for their tv episode and interview the locals just as the tv shows such as Ghost Adventures do and then they finally enter the building and the scares begin!
Prepare to jump a lot!!!! It's very scary. The storyline is also really engaging and keeps you hooked until the end. If found footage horror interests you, or you're just looking for a good scary film this one is for you!
There is a second movie but it's nothing compared to this movie. Better than I expected it to be. Saw a few minutes of it on the Horror Channel and was intrigued, but it was twenty minutes in so made a note of the tittle and went to bed.
Few days latter order both films from Amazon; wasn't expecting much, what can you expect from low budget movies with little media interest.
Anyway sat down to watch both back to back with a open mind. This one maintains a style through out and is a lost tape movie, Blare Witch style, only the camera work is far better, a lot is done on static monitor cameras.
The beginning and middle are very believable, atmospheric and creepy much in the style of the classic haunted house movie and if it had carried on in that vain would have made an effective low budget movie.
But they just couldn't resist going over the top with the escalation of the ghosts and it descended in to a parody of it's self with ghosts straight from the fairground ghost train.
The ending leaves a lot to be desired; while watching I thought up three alternate endings that would have worked better, each been more interesting and more original.
As a piece of entertainment it passes 90minutes and I will probably watch it again just not to soon. Oh if you happen to be someone who gets spooked watching this type of movie late at night then watch the extras, of how it was made, that totally defuses any lingering unease.
