Love it. Oh yeah. This Macbeth film makes me hunger for chocolate cake, sandwiches and wine. While Lady Macbeth is a little melodramatic and her dynamic with her husband is less than stellar, the way they use Macbeth himself to evoke Stalin is brilliant.
Patrick Stewart really brings his A-game trying to be both the wolf-of-war Macbeth and the is-he-insane-or-just-emotioinal Stalin.
This setting for the play really makes the scene with Malcom and Macduff make so much more sense. In an "iron curtain" setting, of COURSE Malcom would want to make sure Macduff had moral character rather than just trying to climb the ladder and attain power!
One person found this helpful. This production proves by far the universal application of The Bards works. The interpretation is well thought, and the performances excellent.
Best of all, they do not take liberties with the dialog. I enjoyed watching this much better than the theatrical one that came out in Stewart is brilliant, the direction is innovative and amazing!
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Having missed the West End run of this, I'm delighted that it's now on DVD, and that they've done such a superb job of it.
Welbeck Abbey is such a fine location - it looks like a Soviet nightmare, and I want to go there. This is not a place for an in-depth critique of the text, save to note that its quality is inconsistent, and that the Scottish ruling cadre that it presents is ill-defined.
As with Dickens, a director really has to trim, to adapt, just as much as Hemming and Condell compounded.
There's no suggestion in the text that Ross is the anonymmous 'Lord' of Act3 Sc6, nor that Lennox is torturing him, for instance, and in the text the first lines are those of the witches, while this version starts with the 'bloody man', who delivers his speeches before one witch injects him full of death, and 'Where shall we three meet again?
The production has no reserve in getting its hands not just dirty, but gory to the armpits; Fleance may escape the train on which Banquo is liquidated, but the ensuing purge takes many others.
Macbeth's portrait, very much in the manner of Stalin, dominates the banquet which, it is quite clear, the diners only care about leaving alive. The fear of Macbeth is palpable, and when Angus makes to light up, Macbeth takes and crumples the cigarette, sprinkling the tobacco over his head.
Angus does not dare brush it off. The 'musical mop' dance - where the odd one out has to dance with the mop - has a horrrifc subtext of 'which of us ends up getting tortured?
Seyton, the old man and the porter all get merged into one person - Christopher Patrick Nolan - and he plays it very well - sinister and campy - though I'd prefer them as three different people.
Paul Shelley provides a suitably imperial Duncan, though I'd have liked to hear the martlet line when he arrived in the game-strewn kitchens of Glamis - 'Martlet for dinner!
I love Martlet! The final battle scenes look like WW2 Eastern Front newsreel - all Buddlea, cordite and confusion, with Mac the only one still in focus.
Patrick Stewart is superb as Macbeth - an ordinary soldier infected with and destroyed by kingship - he seems just about to start to enjoy being king in the scene where he and his wife are majestically sitting on horseback, but no - he's planning the murder of his friend Banquo, so he's not happy at all.
He clings to power, terrified of losing it, as it destroys him cell by cell, like a desease. This is a very finely played performance of a man turned into a monster by his own ambition, and all too aware of the humanity he has lost.
And Kate Fleetwood is brilliant as Mrs Mac; running from termagent to murdress to nervous wreck to madness.
All steely, hooded-eyed, sexual menace at the start, then desperate to save her man from insanity at the banquet Banquo is on the table, which would upset him , then sonambulic nightmare and washing her hands with bleach in a telly-shouting scene of 'For goodness sake!
There's taps right in front of you - get those hands under running water now! They are incredibly sinister - none of the pointy hats and cats and hooked noses - just cold, malign, destructive nastiness - the poison in the body politic and they're nurses - who'd suspect them?
Fortunately Hecate is absent. Excellent version, imagined in a shadowy subterranean bunker, with uniforms and iconography reminiscent of Soviet Russia.
The witches are particularly chilling-their invocation ritual is not for the squeamish! I used this version to teach the play to a class of recalcitrant y9s, and it really gripped them- after the second lesson they were asking for more!
Fabulous production and acting. Great introduction to the play for students too.
I have given three stars as everyone obviously worked very hard in very uncomfortable conditions to produce this film but I don't think I will watch it again.
Ooooh, so close. Pretty much the entire film is absolutely beautiful to look at except for the end sequence, which is simply far too red.
So it is with the adaptation overall : a great deal of it is done very well indeed, but other parts are strangely flawed. The acting is spot on.
Macbeth is simultaneously a grieving father, a warrior, a leader of men yet racked with doubt, a gracious host and a foul murderer - and he's utterly convincing as all of these.
How full of scorpions is his mind indeed. Lady Macbeth is absolutely the complex and sinister villain you'd expect from the role. It's worth repeating how beautiful the cinematography is.
So for the positive sides you've got some damn fine actors spouting gobsmackingly beautiful Shakespearean dialogue in the gorgeously dark and barren highlands of Scotland.
All this makes it well worth watching. The director seemed to forget he was telling a story and concentrated on winning awards at Cannes. Some of the more melodramatic scenes have been toned down or cut out altogether.
Most notably, there's no "fire burn and cauldron bubble" speech. The "witches" are just ordinary people who live in a field.
OK, I get how you would tone things down to interpret the play, but it's just a little too much. Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene also feels just a bit odd.
She's just sat on the floor delivering a soliloquy whilst doing precisely nothing. That's not how I pictured the scene at all.
Too often the characters seem to be talking to themselves when they should be interacting with each other. Rather a lot of dialogue appears to have been cut from the play which probably shouldn't have been, leading to some oddly long silent sequences, especially at the start.
Lots of quiet brooding here when there should be more explicit emotion. More interactions needed.
It's like the goal was to try and blur the line between the soliloquies and the ordinary interactions - if so, this is a failure.
Which is not to say that the film doesn't do a darn fine job when it's being a bit more conventional. And why is it that Macbeth, a nobleman and commander of the royal army, lives in a small wooden hut in the field?
He can't even afford to give Duncan a room, so he has to sleep in a tent. That just seemed Even so, it's a fine piece of work overall.
Must have read Macbeth at least 10 times throughout school for exams and at least 5 times since leaving so when I read that it was gonna get the big screen treatment and with the excellent Michael Fassbender as Macbeth it seemed like a dream come true.
Unfortunately the dream ended rather sudden, roughly at the 20 minute mark of the film for me. Fassbender as Macbeth is brilliant, intense and with haunting eyes.
The scenery is breathtaking and the battle visuals are superb. What lets down this film is the muddying of the dialogue.
Anyone who has read Shakespeare knows that his plays use small verse's, like a sonnet, so the character's scene builds as it goes. Yet in this film so the dialogue comes out in one long run, almost like the character has verbal diarrhoea, add to that some additional dialogue to fit in with modified scenes and the film becomes in my opinion a mess.
It's admittedly been many years since I read or saw another version of 'Macbeth' but although it does seem that this version makes some alterations which is not in and of itself always a problem I think , from memory the story still largely follows the path of the source.
However, I would say that there is a certain visual beauty and impact brought to this version by director Justin Kurzel that makes it worth checking out at least the once.
Performances are just fine from an able cast led by Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, but having watched it once, I'm not sure I'd need to watch it again in a hurry.
