I would hope a monument would be placed there. It is a brilliant piece of cinema. Clearly it's central theme is slavery, and the depravity human nature can so easily reach; but it has many other small moments that trigger thoughts about wider issues - the role of religion being one for example.

You cry because what you witness is truly terrible, not because the violins are out and the director's tugging on your heart strings.

While we were researching, I opted to rent this movie. Although he is very young, I thought it was critical for him to know about slavery, and what African Americans had to go through.
He was disturbed by what he saw, and perhaps he was too young for this movie, but again, I thought it was an important history lesson.
I also wanted him to have a deep understanding of slavery, and this movie delivered. Graphic and heartbreaking, tells one mans story and what he and his family had gone through when he was kidnapped and forced to work as a slave.
The abuse at the hands of their masters was reprehensible and was difficult to view. Also the way women were treated, and raped at the hands of their masters placed a knot in the pit of my stomach.

This movie is real, raw, and a true story. You may hear some people say how some slaves "had it good". Or they "got lucky". Bottom line shows you how ownership of any human being is wrong, and it permits their progression ie is the epitome of oppression and degradation.
