I hated the scene where a woman skins and kills a rabbit. As a rabbit lover, I just can't watch. It's the once scene where I want to fast forward.
Forget politics and catch this little gem. He interviews the Old Money Women at the golf course, the local celebrities who made good and came back, and does a nice flashback to the 50s and 60s when times were good.

I don't usually care for Michael Moore movies hated Canadian Bacon , but this was an early and earnest little film, and I think he did a good job.

First, to be clear, I do not agree with all of Moore's ideology or political views. I don't always agree with the actions he chooses.
I have great respect for how he has pursued his interest in the general welfare of people, especially as they relate to being subjects of a government.
I decided to see Moore's films after seeing him speak at his Broadway show. This is not a 5star film - my 5 stars are because I can't believe he has persisted all these years.
It's a 3 star film, perhaps. I put it on to play and he would not play. I changed it around and did that many times and no difference.
A sign came on saying something about it was unable to play. I ordered used so just threw it away. I should have returned it but didn't know then it was easy to do.

Over the course of the film, Moore attempts to track down Smith at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club and the Detroit Athletic Club , only to be told either that Smith is not there or to leave by employees and security guards.
From there, Moore begins to explore the emotional impact of the plant closings on his friends. He interviews Ben Hamper , an auto worker who suffered a nervous breakdown on the assembly line and is residing at a mental health facility.
Moore also talks to the residents of the affluent suburb of Grand Blanc , who display classist attitudes about Flint's hardships; at a roaring twenties -themed party they are hosting, Moore takes note when they hire laid off workers to be human statues.

High-profile people are shown coming to Flint to bring hope to the unemployed, some of them interviewed by Moore. President Ronald Reagan visits the town and suggests that the unemployed auto workers find work by moving across the country, though the restaurant he visits has its cash register stolen during the event off-camera.
The Flint mayor pays television evangelist Robert Schuller to preach to the town's unemployed. Moore attends the annual GM shareholder meeting, disguised as a shareholder himself.
However, when he gets a turn at the microphone to air his grievances to the board, Smith appears to recognize Moore and immediately shuts him out and has the convention adjourned, despite Moore's attempts to interrupt him.

Crime becomes so prevalent that when the ABC News program Nightline tries to do a live story on the plant closings, someone steals the network's van along with the cables , abruptly stopping the broadcast.

However, it's tough to process this message when Smith is making millions of dollars, and those at the bottom, his workers, are being evicted from their homes.
Moore does a fantastic job putting all of this in context, and it's highly ironic that Flint was the site where the power of the United Auto Workers union was once wielded so effectively.
In a sit-down strike within the plant itself, it stopped all production for six weeks in before the company gave in to some of their demands.
In the era of globalization the union is crippled by GM simply going around them to Mexico. One of the workers interviewed is quite perceptive in also noting that the union is weaker because union leaders have gotten too close to company management.
Moore also captures quite a bit of footage showing average people, and juxtaposing it with the completely tone-deaf, out of touch, and entitled rich, who show little sympathy.
When one old lady hits a golf ball while speculating the unemployed are that way because they're lazy, it makes the blood boil. They're also mind numbing at a lavish 'Great Gatsby' party, complete with hiring a few people to pose in a frozen position as if they're statues, and then later at a 'Jailhouse' party, where the night before a large new prison is opened you know, to handle the wave of crime , they're allowed to party and sleep in a jail cell.
It's all a giant game to them, and they insist that Flint is a great place to be. We also see various civic leaders, entertainers, and preachers brought in trying to pump up crowds with pep talks, performances, and sermons, and while they may have had the best of intentions, it also comes across as failing to address the main issue.
Oftentimes we see a beaming, cheerful, optimistic face and yes, white with some degree of affluence spouting platitudes; we never see them criticize GM, have a nuanced discussion about ways to make the situation more fair, or even show a little more gravitas.
The schemes the city cooks up are absolutely disastrous, including opening a theme park and getting a luxurious Hilton built, costing millions and millions of precious dollars, and closing shortly afterwards.
While I admire Moore for the film, there were a couple of moments that made me cringe. The first is when he keeps after Miss Michigan who would go on to become Miss America , who is there for a parade, and initially gives some superficial answers when he asks her what she thinks of the layoffs.
It just seems a little off target, even if her smiling face and the parade are ironic in light of the misery in the town.
Far worse, though, is when he shows a lady kill and then butcher a bunny, in what is an extended and very graphic sequence.
There is absolutely no reason to include this, since he's already established the fact that this lady grows rabbits to both eat and sell, in order to try to eke out an existence.
I was so disgusted and disappointed that I considered lowering my review score, but cut Moore some slack because of how important I think the film was.
Just beware, it's after the 1 hour point but no, I'm not going to go seek it out and get a more precise time.
Moore is accused of being biased, but what we see here are true events and real people. In this film, he gives us a window into what would become a growing trend in America, and was ahead of his time in doing so.

This is a very good documentary that illustrates the consequences of what happens to a town, when a major industry shuts down. As such, Moore goes on a quest to speak to Smith to find out exactly his rationale for relocating those 30, jobs from Flint, thus devastating the city, and to show Smith firsthand that devastation.
But Moore's quest is easier said than done. Moore gets turned back by one security guard after another wherever Smith is at the time. At one time, Flint employed more GM auto workers than any other city in the world and provided a quality of life that was unknown in America up to that point.
As a young man Moore has no interest in staying in Flint and left after publishing his own magazine for 10 years. He eventually returned just as GM announced the closing of 11 plants and the laying off of 30, employees - all while being extremely profitable and building new plants in Mexico.
Flint fell on hard times with high levels of unemployment, abandoned housing and increased crime rates. The movie therefore gives an in-depth analysis of society.
Flint is a city within America which is a capitalist society driven by capitalist ideologies. Conflict theory highlights the implications of such a system and ideology on social structures.
Society is fragmented into groups which compete for economic and social power and resources. The group that has access and control to the means of production has the ultimate power.
Maintenance of social order is done through domination with those hording the greatest number of economic, political and social resources having power and control over the whole society.
Flint is an example of such society when GM CEO Roger and other rich residents make decisions that influence the entire community. In such societies, there is little or no concern for the working class as the bourgeoisie exploit them.
Moore chronicles how the United Auto Workers was formed. The group of workers was separate from the management of GM and had less pay.
The workers were striking because of the working environment and reduced wages. Inequalities are clear in the movie.
In conflict theory, inequalities exist as a result of the control among the elite. Those in control therefore make decisions and activities to their advantage at the expense of the poor or working class in the society.
Roger Smith represents the bourgeoisie who make decisions to maximize profits at the expense of a community that has served and worked with GM.
Plant closures in Flint are viewed as a betrayal to a community that helped GM establish itself in the motor industry. Thousands of Flint residents lose their jobs.
More become unemployed, homeless and impoverished. Roger does not seem affected by this decision. General Motors Company claims the closures and the overall impact they have had in Flint are regrettable.
However the company diverges from the truth that it is recruiting cheaper labor from Mexico. In conflict theory, the masses are not guided by society, the social structures and values.
The masses are coerced and guided by those in power. Moore attempts to reach Roger but he can not even reach him at his office.
Groups and individuals proceed to advance their personal interests while they struggle tirelessly to control societal resources. Roger used his power to close the plants in Flint.
In addition, groups of elites such as celebrities and president Regan come into the city. They do not offer proper solutions but rather advice and urge the citizens to be patient and persevere through the tumultuous period.
It is also interesting to notice that despite Regan being a national leader, he does not foot the bill for the pizza he eats. Social exploitation is dominant in the movie.
Roger Smith closes the GM plants to layoff workers. The workers in America are seen as a group of people who are aware of their rights and are members of trade unions and socialist movements.
They are therefore a threat to mainstream companies seeking to maximize on profits and reduce on labor. Instead General Motors opts for cheap labor in Mexico.
Mexico is a state that is not as developed as America and the cycle of capitalist exploitation between the core and periphery is evident. This is a tenet in the Marxist social theory.
Classes exist in every society and Flint is no different. Though Flint is a small city and most of the people who were employed at GM were not well paid, there lives a community of wealthy residents.
The residents live lavish lifestyles and were renown throughout Flint. They live detached way of life distinct from the regular communities in Flint.
They even reside in the affluent suburbs of Grand Blank. The closure of General Motors in the city did not seem to have any effect on their finances and lavish lifestyles.
They view themselves to be better off than most of those who lost their jobs. When Moore talks to them, they exhibit classist attitudes towards the hardships in Flint.
In addition, they host a party themed for the Roaring Twenties it is noted that they hire workers who were laid off as human statuses.
It is clear that these people hold those who are poor as with the lowest esteem. Many celebrities sing messages of hope such as Pat Boone and Anita Bryant.
