Do not waste a moment of your time watching this garbage. It shouldn't even get 1 star. I remember watching this movie in college around The subject was what makes art obscene and not obscene due to freedom of expression.
A lot of women in the class dropped out and it was 3 weeks into the term but I remember how crazy it was to see the whole film and ask myself "Whatever happens in the past that you do wrong will always come to haunt you even if you change for the better and that the environment you are used to will always force you to go back to old ways.
On watching the movie 35 years later I was now struck by how much I we have changed hardened! The violence didn't seem especially extreme - now the movie is a cult classic!
Of course the lack of shock destroys good part of the original effect of the movie, [spoiler alert!!! What was once an emotional roller coaster ride, now is just an old classic.
I gave it 4 stars based on my remembrances, otherwise it was more of a 3-star flick today. They were supposed to be us today!
Stanley missed the great improvements in dental care. This is a disturbing movie. Along the lines of "", "Fahrenheit ", etc, it tells a story about life in a possible future time when society has pretty much fallen apart.
A classic movie, and a must-see for all you hipsters who like to throw off cultural references that you don't know the origins of -- this movie is the origin of about a half-dozen of them.
You should watch it. I was in the service when I saw this movie and it impressed me instantly. The opening shot of Malcom McDowell's eyes staring intensely at the audience was mesmerizing.
The cinematography, colors and music set this film apart from most other movies. Kubrick had a talent for using music in his films like the scene of the Pan Am spacecraft ascending to the orbiting space station in all the while in perfect synchronization to Strauss's "Blue Danube".
This movie also benefited me because I began collecting Deutsche Grammophon LP's of classical music because I saw Alex using this brand in his tape player.
The quality and fidelity of these LPs was far superior to other LPs available at the time. I even tried to get a turntable like the one Alex had but with no internet I had no clue who made it and even the salesmen at high end audio stores had no clue what I was talking about.
It is interesting that the movie was banned in England for years I guess they felt it was too subversive and disturbing. This from the same folks who thought the Beatles hair was too long!
Not hard to figure what I going to do after I finish this review eh? I imagine that younger viewers of this film will wonder what all the fuss was about the violence it portrays having seen films like "Saw" and "Silence of the Lambs" but they didn't grow up in a time where censorship and public mores were much more conservative than they are now.
About a month after I first saw the film I ran into a gang of youths dressed like Alex and his Droogs down to the fake eyelashes, codpieces and Bowler hats and beret.
Needless to say I gave them a wide berth. The Film gave me an appreciation of Beethoven and Rossini that persists today. Addendum: I just started watching the Blu Ray and will inform purchasers that the Blu Ray starts the movie without any menu being presented to the viewer.
The menu is available by pressing the menu button but it is a menu for special features only and has no chapter function. This is mollified by the fact that this Blu Ray restarts where it left off when you press stop.
I wish all Blu rays would do this. Further Addendum: The Blu Ray has chapters which can be accessed with the chapter forward and back keys on the remote.
It just has no chapter menu function. Now I have just finished watching the film and all of the superb extra features. I can recommend this films extras as this is one of the few times I bothered to watch the extras and they are very informative and entertaining.

The film is available in other formats, but this 40 year anniversary edition is not. You will need a multi region blue ray player to view this, and most likely need to import from the usa, but if you meet the above criteria this is the version you need, and want, its fantastic!

The new version contained approximately 31 seconds of replacement, less lascivious footage for two scenes: the high speed 2 fps orgy in Alex's bedroom, and the Ludovico rape scene.
The bedroom scene was made more comical by having one of the girls fall off the bed and Alex joins her down there. The Ludovico rape scene was altered in that the scenes with the first two droogs was from the side and waist-up, so it is less explicit.
The third droog was removed completely and replaced with a close-up of one of the doctor's face as they are watching Alex's treatment.

You have the right to be repulsed by it, but you do not have the right to pass judgement without understanding its meaning. The art in the movie has nothing to do with the plot or the characters.
It is found hanging like a big fat neon sign; the overarching thematic narrative. It says: As ugly and brutish as life is, we as human beings manage to make it much, much worse.
Not a feelgood film. Quite the opposite. You're supposed to have a good cry after, and walk away a stronger person prepared to do your part to avoid a future like this from becoming a reality.
