Bonavena Fight of Lego Spiderman Deutsch Century Frazier vs. This is not the George we know and love today, but a surly, taciturn giant. He uses his high profile to deliver messages of racial pride, heritage, hope and peace. External Reviews. The film creates a good overview of the country of Zaire and it's people. The film reveals the great music of the event, including the heart retching song for which the movie was named.
My only regret is director Leon Gast chose to cutout portions of the fight rather than showing to whole thing. If the whole fight were shown, it would reveal how the tide turned to Ali in the fight, showing how George tired as he flailed away against a hard to hit opponent, perhaps the greatest defensive fighter of all time.
Congratulations to all who worked on this film. Mohammad Ali is shown often in the perspective of one of his many goals to be a fine example to youth e.
But it's much more than a boxing feature, more than the iconography that surrounds boxing, it details an amazing "boys own" story of an adventure.
It's near the top of my list of favourite documentaries. It's easy to forget how brilliant Muhammad Ali was, both as a boxer and as a media icon.
This documentary, deserved of its Academy Award, shows the man and the myth at his peak and paints a vivid picture of one of the 20th century's most fascinating and dynamic sporting chapters.
The Ali-Foreman "Rumble in the Jungle" stands apart from the rest of boxing, the rest of sport. The music's great too.
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. This is easily my favourite documentary of all time, chronicling the the build up to the legendary 'Rumble in the Jungle.
Ali is at the peak of his powers here. This is the funny, boastful, charming Ali we enjoy watching.
He loved the cameras, and they loved him. His soundbites and witticisms are gold. Also, his remarkable intelligence and fierce pride is evident, like when he observes that a plane with an all black crew is something you would never see in the US.
Arriving in Zaire, he wins the Africans over with astonishing ease. Still, it's one thing to win over a country - it's another to win against Foreman!
This is not the George we know and love today, but a surly, taciturn giant. While he cannot compete with Ali popularity-wise, a lot of people favour him to win this fight.
And quite honestly, watching him pound a heavy bag until he leaves a dent in it, can you blame them?
Even though Ali points out that he's knocked out heavy hitters like Sonny Liston before, shocking the world, most don't fancy his chances.
The fight itself is a thrilling, epic affair. If only I'd been alive to see it! Ali, perhaps wisely, doesn't go toe to toe with Foreman.
Nor does he dance, as had been expected. Instead he uses his speed, reflexes and fabulous boxing brain effectively, pulling some clever tricks out of the bag, like right hand leads and of course, the rope-a-dope.
Plus, he shows just tough he is. Even thought Foreman does occasionally hit him with some tasty shots, Ali merely shrugs them off and taunts George for not hitting hard enough!
How do you deal with someone like that? Foreman had no answer, except to keep slugging away to the point of exhaustion. By the way, the music is great, too.
We get to see the likes of James Brown, B. King and The Spinners in their prime, and that's a great privilege. I have watched this many times, and will watch it many more.
The story of Ali's 'Rumble in the Jungle' has passed into boxing folklore. In my opinion this is the best film coverage of the event, giving detailed background information and setting the scene superbly.
Ali was the underdog and expected to lose. He used all his boxing skills, and more, to regain the title. The apin, the torment, the self-doubt: they are all here.
This is a true-life experience. If it was fiction, no-one would believe it. Report abuse. Muhammad Ali at 32 was considered past his prime for the Zaire fight, and the menace of George Foreman who earlier destroyed both Joe Frazier and Ken Norton in the ring, arrive in the African state as overwhelming favourite only to be outwit by Ali in what became known as the "Rumble in the Jungle".
But here, Ali displays strength, skill, intelligence, and charm was able to use the now-famous "Rope-a-Dope" tactic to pull off what is probably boxing's greatest upset.
When We Were Kings chronicles the meeting of these two titans. Makes this DVD an absolute gem to have. Totally overrated doc.
Probably best documentary ever made. Play it to the very end. Fabulous on every element of film making and tells a great story.

That's culture as defined by its people, music, athletes, politics, business and other innumerable parts, as observed by several different people, inside and outside.
The insights offered by George Plimpton and Norman Mailer are priceless. It's history and entertainment together, and thoroughly enjoyable to watch.
It would be simplistic and unjust to reject the Documentary because of personal prejudices or disagreement with Ali's politics.
It is also a mistake to isolate and criticize colourful comments, chants and poetry! Not only was Ali a great boxer and a great entertainer, he is an intelligent and articulate man.
He uses his high profile to deliver messages of racial pride, heritage, hope and peace. The fact that Parkinson's Disease has physically afflicted and almost silenced this man is a tragedy.
We have been deprived of hearing what the 26 years of life experience since may have done to Ali's outlook and beliefs. Writing this has inspired me to go to the library; maybe he hasn't been silenced totally, and someone is talking for him.
